2. In Adobe illustrator on your computer, open the PDF file and create a new vector file with the original dimensions. It’s better to work with ai file than pdf file.

3. Next, in order to better see your layer’s icons, go into layers => click on the three stripes and select Panel Options => write 40 pixels in other, Row Size.

4. Now we need to set up the layers. Find a <Clipping Path> in any layer’s group and click on it. You will see a rectangle, this is the outline that each layer has. You need to delete all of them as they have no value in your work.

5. On the panel, hover over Select => then Same => click on Fill & Stroke. Now you see all the rectangles, click just delete.

6. Next, each layer should have a different selection color. Go to layers => click on the three stripes and choose Release to Layers (Sequence). You can see that your layers are numbered now. That’s very good!

Basically, this is the end of the tutorial, you can do whatever you want with the layers. But I recommend taking a few more steps to get your layers looking good, before you send your source file to a client.

Additionally:

Tip: draw outlines and use a fill tool. It’s easier and less time for creating your illustration.

7. To reduce the number of layers, select a layer’s group and click on an empty space next to a circle outline. You have a colored square and highlight all the layers in the group, you need to Unite them.

8. Before this step, you need to display a Pathfinder. Go to Window => press Pathfinder.

9. Next you see Shape Modes => click Unite. Done!

So, now the layers are united. When you hover over an object in your illustration, it looks whole and not divided into different parts.

Do these steps for all groups and as a result you will have the neat vector file understandable for you and your client!
